Benjamin Ide Wheeler on October 28th 1944 off Leyte Island, Philippines after she was hit and set afire by a falling Jap bomber. In sqelching the gasoline fire, the stern of the shipp sank from the amount of water poured into her. Owned by U.S.Department of Commerce and operated by American-Hawaiian Steamship Co.under WSA Service Agreement Form GAA.
